The location

Everything you came to see fits within five hundred metres

Villa Alta occupies the second floor of a colonial house on Callejón de los Estribos, around the corner from Plaza de Santo Domingo. Inside the walls there are no journeys, only five-minute walks. The museums, the squares, the Clock Tower (Torre del Reloj) and the tables where people dine at night are all within the same radius.

That is why guests rate the location 9.8 out of 10 on Booking.com — the property's highest score, from 306 reviews.

The house

A colonial house that never pretended to be anything else

Between the walls and the old buttresses, a sky-blue façade recalls the bright skies of the Caribbean. Step inside and the interior is vivid: exposed brick nobody wanted to cover, original hydraulic tiles underfoot, wooden beams overhead and walls in olive green and terracotta.

The restoration kept what the house already had and added what it lacked. The walls tell the stories of colonial Cartagena; the interiors were designed for a generation of travellers who come to stay, not to pass through.

Breakfast

There is no breakfast room and no timetable to keep. The night before you choose the time, and breakfast arrives at your door on the dot: continental or American, with fruit, coffee and fresh juice.

It is the detail that comes up most in reviews, and the reason many guests have breakfast on the balcony before the old town wakes up.

Old Town guide

Living Cartagena from inside the walls

Staying inside the walled city changes the trip: you walk everywhere, head out without a plan and come back when the sun gets fierce. This is what we tell first-time visitors.

The walled city in a day

A walk that leaves from the door and returns without repeating a street:

  • Early. Breakfast in your room and out to Parque Bolívar before nine, while there is still shade. The Zenú Gold Museum is right there and entry is free.
  • Mid-morning. The Palace of the Inquisition, half a block away, to understand how the city was built.
  • Midday. The church and cloister of San Pedro Claver, with the Museum of Modern Art opposite.
  • Afternoon. Plaza de los Coches and the Clock Tower, then up onto the city walls.
  • Sunset. Walk the walls towards Café del Mar: it is where the sun sinks into the sea and where everyone ends up.
  • Evening. Back to Plaza de Santo Domingo for dinner at the tables out on the street.

Where to eat without taking a taxi

Plaza de Santo Domingo and its alleys hold a good share of the old town's cooking. On the same block there are three well-known kitchens: Pelikano, La Flaca Bohemia and Donde Olano.

Around them, less than five minutes away, are the tables of Plaza de San Diego and Calle del Arsenal. In high season it is worth booking: the concierge will do it for you before you arrive.

To taste the local food without leaving the neighbourhood: arepa de huevo (a fried corn cake with an egg inside) and corozo juice in the morning, seafood casserole or posta cartagenera (beef in a dark sweet sauce) for lunch, and ceviche late in the afternoon.

From the airport to the door

Rafael Núñez International Airport is 5 km from the old town: 15 to 25 minutes by car depending on traffic.

There are authorised taxis at the arrivals exit and ride-hailing apps too. If you would rather not negotiate anything when you land, we arrange the transfer in advance through the virtual concierge.

About cars: Villa Alta has no parking. The walled city's streets are narrow and one-way, and there are hourly public car parks a few blocks away. Inside the walls you do not need a car: everything is on foot.

When to go

Cartagena is warm all year, between 28 and 32 °C, with the sea breeze as the only real relief.

  • December to April. Dry season, a steady breeze and the most pleasant days. Also the busiest and most expensive time, especially between Christmas and New Year and at Easter.
  • May to July. A good middle ground: fewer people, short afternoon showers, more reasonable rates.
  • August to November. The rainy season. It rains hard but in bursts, and it is when the old town feels calmest.

For walking the city, any time of year works if you follow the local rhythm: go out early, take shelter at midday and head back out as the afternoon cools.
